When choosing an outdoor kitchen, the material your cabinetry is crafted from is the most important factor in ensuring long term durability in the most demanding of climates. Many homeowners are opting for outdoor kitchens constructed of metal, such as aluminum or stainless steel. Outdoor kitchens constructed of metal provide you maximum storage space and usability, matching the design, convenience, and functionality of your indoor kitchen. Metal fabricated outdoor kitchens also offer significant weight savings when compared to concrete or stone, making them perfect if you’re in the market for a deck top outdoor kitchen and allowing you to build your outdoor kitchen with even more features and amenities.
What makes aluminum cabinets an ideal choice for an outdoor kitchen is the lack of iron content found in aluminum, offering an added barrier against rust and corrosion. Aluminum is also significantly lighter in weight when compared with stainless steel of the same thickness, making it a great choice for an outdoor kitchen where weight is a significant concern.
Aluminum can be more susceptible to denting, however, aluminum panels are often manufactured to be just as strong as stainless steel as they can be made thicker than stainless while still maintaining its lightweight properties. With most outdoor grills being made of 304 grade stainless steel, it’s no surprise that cabinet manufacturers also incorporate stainless steel into their designs. What makes stainless steel “stainless” is the presence of at least 10.5% chromium in the makeup of the iron. This key component is what slows down the oxidation or rusting of the material.
It is important to note the word “stainless”, not “stain-free”, meaning the material is not completely rust proof and will deteriorate over time. 316 grade stainless steel, also known as “marine-grade” stainless steel offers even more anti-corrosion properties, however, the material is extremely expensive and difficult to work with.
